I had to settle for a CL Mercedes because of you, non-tithers

    1. I was struggling and reached out to several churches. All I got was thoughts and prayers. It’s all a show.

    2. The Sikh gurdwara have langar where they make a large meal for the community that anyone can come to and share with them free of charge. Look for one in your community.

I was in DC for work this week. Next to the hotel, a homeless man slept on the pavement both nights I was there. Across the street was a church. That was some powerful imagery.

My church is offering help to people in the Bay Area. Please dm if you want their contact info.

    5. How do places have records of tithes? All the money at my local church is cash collected on a silver plate.

    6. If the government actually collect taxes from churches adn required their books to be open to members. 70% would close in a year.

Consider reaching out to local Sikh communities in your area. Helping people or “selfless service” is one of their top priorities. This includes feeding people. I’m not Sikh and can’t explain it well, but I’ve also experienced it firsthand.

    8. I knew someone with a similar story. Their family was struggling and the church refused to offer them any help. It made him stop believing in God

See, and my pastors couldn’t do this if they asked for it. The information’s just not available to them, and I’m very grateful for that. Not because I think they’d abuse it, but because they’re the kind of people who wanted to make it impossible to abuse.b

My father is in his 90’s and lives several hours away from me. He was a Methodist minister and has been attending the same Methodist church for nearly fifty years. My mother recently passed and it contributed to a major decline in his mental faculties that led to him voluntarily giving up his car keys.

I am not able to get down there often to take him to church, so I called the pastor (who had actually been one of his students) and asked if there was anything they could do to help him get to church. I just got a “No, sorry.” No offer to speak to the congregation, no suggestion of local support services, nothing. He gave five decades to the place, dragged me and all my siblings there, and at the end of his life he’s basically just getting a “Damn, that’s crazy” from them. Maybe I’m expecting too much, but I’m damn sure not regretting my decision to stop going to church as soon as I was able.

The mosque in question is the [Islamic Center of Charlotte](https://iccharlotte.org/). Since this has happened, they’ve also opened up a donation link for the sole purpose of buying baby formula. Give them a look if you’re feeling supportive.

“We don’t need social security nets, churches can do their part with charity.”

      Oh boy …

The Catholic church has done so much wrong but I learned for a project in HS (20 years ago but still) in the US they’re the largest funder of social services second only to the federal government.

I hold onto that a lot mentally when I think about my family church growing up and if its okay morally to still think about them positively

I’ll be damned if I ever gave a church a dime of mine. They already don’t pay taxes. TF I look like paying for someone’s mink coat or Range Rover?

    15. Churches are the OG pyramid schemes. They don’t care about you, they care about your money.

    16. Honestly not surprised but this shit makes me so thankful for my old church, minus the actual cult shit.

On multiple occasions as a struggling college student folks would just pay my rent. No questions asked, no audit or breakdown of my financial spending, just straight up “We know its hard take this check for 850, and how much are utilities?”

I put in a lot for that community in terms of watching the children during service at times, helping set up/plan events and so on. Kinda crazy how many churches are getting outworked but still get members to line up because they flat out don’t care about their community.

    17. My most fervent prayer is for my people to release themselves from the clutches of religion.

    18. I think it’s been fairly well proven that those with the least to give tend to be the most generous with what they DO have, as they know just how much it sucks to not have anything.

Check out a local branch of Unitarian Universalists if you have them. They’re more leftist organizations, and they’re based around community and finding your own faith in a safe place, whatever that faith may be. They boast about having Christians, Muslims, atheists, agnostics, and Jewish people among their members. The one I went to in the last city I lived in had a fund for helping those that need it, and several members would donate specifically to it. They’re awesome

    20. I grew up in a black Baptist church (they eventually changed their name, and dropped the Baptist) and I never felt guilty not tithing. 🤷🏽‍♀️

    21. Sikh churches probably would too! Not surprised to hear about the small community one helping either. Just because something isn’t set up doesn’t mean a church can’t figure something out

The law given to Moses had built in protections for the under privileged. Jesus said “you received free, give free”. Paul quoted Jesus “there’s more happiness in giving than in receiving”. How is that so hard to understand. Help people!
